GEICO Reporting Error Causes Incorrect Florida License Suspension Notices

Florida drivers recently faced confusion after a GEICO reporting issue caused some policyholders to receive incorrect notices that their driver licenses had been suspended.

According to GEICO leadership, the company is working with Florida policyholders and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to correct the issue. The problem appears to have involved insurance information that was mistakenly reported to the state, causing some drivers to be told their auto insurance policies had been canceled when they had not.

What happened?

The issue affected some GEICO customers in Florida whose policies were renewed between January 1 and April 13. Because of the reporting error, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department received incorrect information suggesting that certain drivers had a lapse in auto insurance coverage.

In Florida, maintaining required auto insurance coverage is tied to keeping your driver license and vehicle registration in good standing. When the state receives notice of a lapse in coverage, it may issue a warning or suspension notice.

In this case, however, some policyholders reportedly received notices even though their coverage had not actually lapsed.

GEICO says it is working to fix the problem

GEICO stated that it recently identified a reporting issue involving insurance information submitted to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The company said it is working with the state to correct affected records and is proactively contacting policyholders who may have been impacted.

GEICO also said it has a dedicated team in place to assist customers and answer questions.

At this time, the total number of affected policyholders has not been publicly reported.

What affected drivers should do

If you are a Florida GEICO policyholder and your policy renewed between January 1 and April 13, it may be a good idea to verify that your license status is accurate.

Drivers can check their license status directly through the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website.

You may also want to:
  1. Contact GEICO to confirm your policy status.
  2. Keep a copy of your current insurance ID card.
  3. Save any renewal confirmations or payment receipts.
  4. Follow up with FLHSMV if your license status appears incorrect.
  5. Avoid ignoring any state notice, even if you believe it was sent in error.

Why this matters

An incorrect license suspension notice can create serious stress for drivers. It may affect their ability to legally drive, renew registrations, or feel confident that their records are accurate.

Even when an issue is caused by a reporting mistake, drivers are often left having to prove that they had valid coverage in place.

This situation is a reminder of how important it is for policyholders to review insurance documents, renewal notices, and state correspondence carefully.

A note for policyholders

If you ever receive a notice about a lapse in insurance coverage, do not assume it is correct or incorrect without checking. Contact your insurance carrier and the appropriate state agency as soon as possible.

Mistakes can happen, but quick action can help prevent a small administrative issue from becoming a bigger problem.

At Evolve Insurance, we encourage drivers to keep their coverage records organized and to reach out with questions whenever something does not look right. Your insurance coverage is too important to leave to guesswork.
